WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MARCH

By anoopjudge | March 15, 2013

1. The Weather: Spring is in the air. I can see the cherry blossoms blooming out my office window, and my heart somersaults. This is the time of year when saplings surge through the ground, promising to replace the dreary wet carpet of winter with a fresh growth of green. Muddied boots take a rest. Sandals …

MY EXPERIENCES AT THE COCOA BEACH WRITERS’ CONFERENCE

By anoopjudge | February 7, 2013

Two weekends ago I attended the Space Coast Writers Guild conference in sunny Cocoa Beach, Florida.  The conference, in its 31st year, is small in comparison to the upcoming San Francisco Writers conference – 80 or so attendee vs. 500+ but it draws a cachet of talented agents and speakers.  This year was no exception, with big names …

10 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS THAT I WILL LIKELY BREAK

By anoopjudge | January 8, 2013

Much like the rest of the world, ever since I was 14, I’ve been making New Year resolutions on January 2nd and breaking them on January 7th.  This year I determined I would do away with the tradition.  I decided I would not make any resolutions at all – something about the mocking, self-pitying look my older, …

WHAT DO THE HOLIDAYS MEAN TO YOU?

By anoopjudge | November 29, 2012

When I first came to this country, as a new bride, I was struck by the concept of the ‘holidays’.  By mid-November, every commercial on the radio was rhapsodizing about the holidays as was every talk show host and, even, strangers in queue at Macy’s.  I wondered why Americans were so crazy about the holidays.  It’s not …

FREEDOM OF SPEECH & IT’S CONNOTATIONS

By anoopjudge | October 26, 2012

“I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity?  I will be harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice.  On this subject, I do not wish to think, or to speak, or write, with moderation.  NO! no! Tell a man who’s house is on …

AN INDIAN WEDDING…

By anoopjudge | October 4, 2012

“Fill your paper with the breathing of your heart” –William Wordsworth Today my heart breathes, lives and rejoices in attending a 4-day family wedding.  I board the flight from San Francisco to L.A. for my husband’s niece’s wedding, my 14 year-old daughter in tow.  I’d like to whisper sweet nothings in her ear, tell her …

REMEMBERING 9/11

By anoopjudge | September 11, 2012

This weekend was the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  I’m reproducing below a post I first shared two years ago, when the U.S government confirmed that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed.                   And then, the twin towers exploded like a volcano of billowing smoke and human screams. . .                 On the 11th …

THE DRAMA OF THE NORTHERN GRID FAILURE

By anoopjudge | August 22, 2012

Ever since I’ve been back, the question I’ve most frequently encountered is: “Were you there when the Northern grid collapsed?” Yes, indeed I was.  On July 30, 2012, most New Delhi residents were awakened from a deep sleep, when their fans and air-conditioners stopped working.  They came out in herds, out of theirover-heated cement homes …

THINGS I PREFER IN THE U.S. VS. INDIA

By anoopjudge | July 19, 2012

As the country celebrated July 4th two weeks ago & Americans reaffirmed their commitment to freedom, life & liberty, and on the eve of my trip to India, it got me thinking: What are the things I love about living in the U.S., my adopted country, vs. the things I love about the country I left …

The Awakening of Meena Rawat

The Rummy Club

How has your childhood shaped who you are today?

My two brothers are my siblings. One was two years younger than me and a sturdy, long-limbed boy who would punch me in the gut when our fights became violent. I’d go crying to my mother, who would be the mediator of our skirmishes, but one day my mom said, “Go hit him back. You’re going to live in a world of men. You need to know how to deal with them.” That made me who I am today: a former litigator determined to win in a fight. That lesson served me well when I wound up in the query trenches and spent seven years trying to get traditionally published.
